Bird’s Motorsport - Strong Finish to the Season in Spain

Jarama 2009

The final round of the 2009 FIA European Truck Racing Championship took place in front of a crowd of 41,000 at the hot and sunny Circuito del Jarama near Madrid this weekend (October 3/4).

The twisty and undulating Spanish track produced some fierce and competitive racing and was a tough challenge for the entire pack of 31 competitors – Chris Levett was on top form in the Spanish sunshine… claiming four podium results (3rd in both Saturday races / 3rd in race 3 and a superb 2nd in the final race of the weekend).

In the first timed practice Levett was 5th fastest – but in the first championship race he moved up to a fine 3rd by the flag.
Race 2…where the ‘reverse grid’ formula placed him on the third row of the grid – saw Levett really charging hard to again make impressive progress to again take the third step of the podium.

In practice on Sunday morning Levett improved in his best time the previous day by another tenth of a second – to post 4th fastest lap. In Championship race 3 he converted that into another great 3rd place.

The last race of the day was a real thriller – with the loud and enthusiastic Spanish crowd on their toes as local hero Antonio Albacete powered his MAN to a popular ‘home’ win. But just as impressive was Levett’s performance as he headed the rest of the pack to come home in the runner-up spot – completing an excellent weekend where he netted a total of 41 points to end the season 5th overall in the FIA European Championship standings.
